Developing T-shaped professionals

TIMREX aims to prepare earth science specialists with skills to apply innovative mineral exploration methods and techniques at field conditions. In addition, to train T-shaped professionals to integrate the field data with comprehensive analytical and laboratory results, and to compose and interpret the datasets in 3D and 4D geological models. In addition, students will learn entrepreneurial and socio-civic skills and attitude to be employed by a junior company, or a freelanced expert, even as a Qualified Person under one of the CRIRSCO codes.

Some of the graduates who have better technical capability to equipment development or programming will have the opportunity to specialize in this field, contributing to research groups and start-ups to develop sensors, portable analytical equipment (in-hand or drone-based), or data processing and visualizing software. Industrial and research partners of the consortium will mentor these students – with the help of academic partners – to be able to join start-ups and even initiate start-ups for the resource exploration sector. Additionally, academic staff will receive trainings on relevant competences such as teaching methods of entrepreneurial skills, on science to business models which will directly be used for the teaching.

Cooperation with start-ups

A key objective of TIMREX is a cooperation with start-ups and competence development for the students. Prospecting phase of the mineral exploration value chain is completed primarily by junior companies, or freelanced experts who can be considered as start-up companies, requiring enhanced entrepreneurial skills from the employees. At different stages of the exploration value chain, companies use specific services such as drilling, borehole geophysics, areal geophysics, droning, data processing, analytics etc., which are provided by small companies and start-ups – especially offering novel technologies and solutions.

Industry & research partners

SMEs will contribute to the study programme by proposing thesis works, to teaching as invited speakers, contribute to the teaching of entrepreneurship, thus contributing to students joining start-ups. Research institutes will contribute to the project by mentoring the curriculum development, proposing thesis works, supervising student research and development activities, contributing to teaching as invited speakers, contribute to the teaching of entrepreneurship and of social licence to operate issues. In addition, mining companies will help with their expertise as advisory board members, provide invited lecturers on key learning objectives; propose thesis work topics; and contribute to field camp activities.
